What is Ayurveda

Ayurveda gradually found its way into my life as I sought healing, health, and well-being. Like many others, my journey was influenced by the most popular and discussed trends of the time.


As a teenager, I was swayed by my peers and "the experts," adhering to the idea of a "recommended daily allowance" (which involved counting calories and food groups) and weekly weigh-ins to track my weight gain or loss. This number defined my self-worth, and even today, I must consciously work to break this destructive mindset.


It was during my practice of Kundalini Yoga that Ayurveda started to emerge. As the sister science of Yoga, Ayurveda gently revealed itself to me through direct experience.


In my early encounters with Ayurveda, I was introduced to a series of herbal supplements prescribed by a reputable Ayurvedic practitioner in San Diego, who was well-known in the Kundalini Yoga community. He sourced high-quality herbal formulas from India, which supported me through my pregnancies, breastfeeding, and the first five years of motherhood. I also consulted him for general ailments during this period and found Ayurvedic herbs more beneficial than Western medicines.


Later, in Washington DC, my yoga studio offered an introductory Ayurveda course. My friend and I signed up, which unveiled new aspects of Ayurveda and clarified previously unclear concepts. This ignited my interest and desire to learn more.


I completed a Masters in Ayurvedic Digestion and Nutrition in 2017, which transformed my life for the better. My love and respect for Ayurveda continue to fuel my quest for deeper knowledge and understanding.


Now, as a practitioner, I feel strongly about guiding and supporting students and clients on their own Ayurvedic journeys. My goal is to educate clients about their constitution and share Ayurveda's philosophy for a balanced, healthy life, emphasizing its potential for growth. Ultimately, I want to empower clients to take charge of their health and well-being, becoming their own healers.


Ayurveda, translated as "the knowledge of life and longevity," is an ancient Indian holistic medical system focused on maintaining balance and health within the mind, body, and soul. It offers an integrated approach to preventing and treating illness, as Ayurvedic theory suggests all diseases stem from an imbalance or stress in one's consciousness.


Our digestive system plays a vital role in our health, as our ability to digest, break down, and absorb nutrients directly impacts our body's functioning. Our digestion of experiences and emotions also affects our well-being.


Ayurveda identifies our personal constitution in the form of Doshas (energy). The three Doshas—Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (water and earth)—are combinations of the five elements (air, fire, water, earth, and ether) that make up the universe.


What I appreciate most about Ayurveda is its personalized approach to health, treating each person as a unique individual. Knowing your mind-body type allows you to make optimal choices regarding diet, exercise, supplements, and other lifestyle factors.


The saying "one man's medicine is another man's poison" rings true. What works for you may not work for others. For instance, consuming a healthy, organic salad may seem beneficial, but if your digestion is weak, it could ferment in your gut, creating toxins that negatively impact your well-being.


During my training, I became fascinated by the delicate balance between mind, body, and soul, realizing that unresolved emotions and thought processes could affect my health, constitutional balance, and overall well-being despite my healthy lifestyle, meditation, and yoga practice.


Ayurveda helps you understand your true self, your constitution, your digestion of food and emotions, and your strengths and weaknesses. By considering your exercise regimen, belief system, and the ever-changing energies, environments, and seasons, Ayurveda offers a holistic perspective. Finding your balance amidst these factors allows you to live your life to its fullest potential.


Embracing Ayurveda is a transformative journey, as it encourages self-discovery and self-awareness. As a practitioner, I am passionate about guiding others on this path, helping them understand their unique constitutions, and equipping them with the tools they need to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.


The wisdom of Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of harmony within ourselves and our surroundings. By learning to recognize our individual needs and adapting our lifestyle accordingly, we can nurture our mind, body, and soul, ultimately leading to a healthier, more fulfilled life.


With Ayurveda, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health. It encourages us to listen to our bodies, understand our personal constitutions, and make choices that align with our unique needs. By embracing the principles of Ayurveda, we can empower ourselves to take control of our health and well-being, paving the way for a vibrant, balanced life.


In conclusion, my journey with Ayurveda has been enlightening and life-changing. It has provided me with valuable insights and tools to better understand myself and others, and it has allowed me to help others improve their lives through holistic, personalized health practices. The beauty of Ayurveda lies in its ability to guide us towards balance and harmony, enabling us to live our lives to the fullest potential.
