Understanding the words Sat Nam

What does the mantra Sat Nam mean and what are it's benefits
Sat Nam explained

In Kundalini Yoga practice, we frequently use the mantra Sat Nam. This mantra helps to manage racing thoughts and bring your mind back to the present moment, synchronizing it with your breath and movement. We silently vibrate "Sat" on every inhale and "Nam" on every exhale. To close the class, we chant Sat Nam three times. This mantra fosters courage and the embodiment of your truth.

Sat Nam is derived from the ancient Sikh language, Gurmukhi, where "Sat" means truth and "Nam" means name. Collectively, Sat Nam translates to a more profound meaning: "I am truth" or "Truth is my identity." Known as a bija (seed) mantra, Sat Nam is a one-syllable sound that activates the chakras. Mantras create vibrations that shift us on an atomic level, and in particular, the vibration of Sat Nam initiates the journey to our true selves. Individual truth and universal truth converge.

Yogi Bhajan once said, "It is small and potent. Great things grow from it."

Sat Nam is about expressing your unique true identity, benefiting not only yourself but also those around you. No one else can express the precise combination of frequencies that you can. You are connected to the universe, and your uniqueness is invaluable.

Living your truth takes courage. It involves standing tall in who you are, even in the face of family expectations, societal pressure, or external influences. Chanting Sat Nam aligns you with your true self, reinforcing that connection. As Sat Nam manifests in your life, you become more aware of choices that may not align with your true identity. Chanting Sat Nam from the heart enables you to break through the fear in your mind and fully connect with your authentic self.

Sat Nam is a universal mantra, transcending religion or belief systems, and can be practiced by anyone seeking to embrace their truth.
